Registering your address in Wuhan: the 24-hour rule
Wuhan hosts one of China's largest international student populations. Students living off campus must register themselves — here is how.
Wuhan has one of the largest concentrations of international students in China. If you live in university accommodation the school usually handles registration; if you rent off campus, it is on you, within 24 hours of moving in.
The rule
Foreign nationals staying in accommodation other than a hotel must register with the local public security organs within 24 hours of moving in. The property owner may file it on your behalf. Failing to register carries a warning and a fine of up to CNY 2,000.
For students this matters twice over: an incomplete registration history complicates visa extensions at the end of a study period.
What to bring
- Your passport, with the current visa or entry stamp
- The rental contract or property ownership certificate
- Your landlord’s ID
Check with your university international office first — many handle registration for students in campus housing, and some assist with off-campus registration too.
